Learn: Heel and toe downshift

Here we are going to explain how to be a Heel and Toe downshift expert. Yup, you heard it right. Have you seen Jackie Chan doing it in movies? Well, you too will be able to do just like that. This is a technique which you’d be able to use only with your manual transmission car. Don’t think of using this technique in automatic transmission mode!!

After you learn how to do this technique effectively, you’ll be able to decrease the wear and tear of your car, and also control your car in a better way than ever. And if you practice it often, then surely, you’ll be improving your lap time, if you are fond of car racing on race tracks.

Heel and toe downshift is a tough technique indeed. You’ll have to use both of your feet, the gear shift lever, all of the pedals, and your right hand. Ahh, would it be something impossible for you to do? Nah, don’t worry. We’ll be explaining how to do it the best way.

A typical driver at a sharp corner, will try to downshift the car pushing the clutch, thus causing the car to buck a bit. This is something that most of us do and it doesn’t provide a smooth shift. Well, we should be knowing how to make the engine speed equal to that of the wheel speed. This is not the case with our driving. When we are going at high speeds, and at the corner, while we want to make a sharp turn, we often downshifts the gear. If initially it was in the 4th gear, he would be downshifting to 2nd gear. Doing so, the engines speed increases from zero to a certain value. This sudden change in the engine’s speed causes the car to buck a little. This will lead to wear and tear as well.

So, if you are going at high speeds and at the corner you are planning to take a sharp turn then you should be following the heel and toe downshifting technique. While applying the brake, the same instant, you should be downshifting the gear. This way, you’ll be able to do a smooth turn at the corner without causing any wear and tear to the car.

Learn: Handbrake Turn

Handbrake turn is a technique which will allow you to turn your car a sharp 180 degree facing the opposite direction. This is one of the easiest car techniques that I know. But, you need to practice it more often. Then only, you’d be able to do it easily. Usually, we do a three point turn in order to achieve a condition stated above. But using the handbrake turn technique, you’ll be abble to do just that, using a U-turn and it will need just minimal space requirements than the conventional method. So, you may find it a handy, in situations when you are with smaller area for taking the turn.

You may use any car of your choice for doing this. But I would recommend a front wheel drive car. And the speed at which you should start should be like 30-35 mph. And don’t think of making it too low or a lot higher than the given range. Doing so won’t make you turn a sharp 180 degree. Also, there are factors other than the speed limit which decides the turning degree. Well, some of them are the road conditions and the nature and type of the tires of your car.

Well, first of all you need to position one of your hands in the steering wheel at the right place. Well, if you are in a left hand drive car, then the right place to place your left hand should be on the right side of the steering wheel. It will depend on the side to which you wanna turn the car as well. If you are with an automatic transmission car, then put the car to neutral at first. After that make sure that the other hand is placed on the hand brake. Don’t use the handbrake now. It’s not the time to apply the handbrake. Only after you start turning the car, you should think of pulling the handbrake. Now, it’s time to provide acceleration smoothy a bit as discussed earlier, and make if you are in an automatic transmission car, then put the car in neutral. And start rotating the steering wheel to one of the sides as you prefer. Rotate the steering wheel until, it gets locked. After a quick second, apply the e-brake if you have it in your car. Otherwise you may yank the handbrake lever. This will ultimately lock the rear wheels. Now, the car will start to turn and during this time you may bring the steering wheel to the center making the front wheels to curve out straight.

If you are with a manual transmission car, then it’s all about applying the throttle at the right levels. Our main aim should be to prevent the excessive spinning of wheels. Different cars are with different rpm levels. So, if you are planning to learn how to launch your are in the quickest time, then you should try holding the throttle at different rpm levels. This way you’ll be knowing the power needed to launch your car the better way. After some experiments with your car, the car would be surely needing some repairs. But, these experiments will surely making you an hard core driver.
