Learn: Short Shifting

Short shifting might not be a word that you would have heard that often. But an experienced driver who knows how to deal with his car at any particular moment and at any circumstances would have surly come across this word many times in his life. Even if most of us don’t have any idea about the meaning of short shifting, still we are used to it while driving. So, what could it be?

Short shifting is all about changing up the gear. The definition is not over yet. So, read on. It is about changing gear without going in the next higher gear but simply jumping ahead of the next higher gear and getting into like 2 gears ahead of the current gear. For example, if you are in the first gear and then if you change the gear to the third gear without changing it to the second gear, it is called as short shifting. Here what we do is, we just neglect a gear that is between the intial gear and the final gear that we are at the moment. So we are actually taking a short cut to be true. But why are we doing so? Are we doing it knowingly or unknowingly? Or is there any use of short shifting?

Well, most of us does short shifting just to save time. We may be sometimes in a hurry or in a straight road right after a big turn to the left or ro the right. At such circumstances many of us have the habit of doing short shifting. But short shifting is used by the experienced drivers in certain situations so as to get rid of that situation and drive smoothly from then on. So, this is a technique used by experienced drivers. So, there are two types of people who use short shifting, and one group use it knowingly and other group use it unknowingly or for no particular reason.
